Tom Hutton

Tom has broad litigation experience, having acted in a range of areas including public inquiries, class actions, personal injury, insurance, misleading and deceptive conduct, and defamation.
Tom commenced in litigation at Corrs Chambers Westgarth in early 2012, and shortly thereafter had carriage of a number of litigious and advisory matters for some the firm’s key clients. Tom has acted for the Catholic Archdiocese of Melbourne, the ACCC, Cargill, the Victorian WorkCover Authority, Victoria Police, Oxfam, Racing Victoria, Penguin and Channel 7. Tom’s media and entertainment litigation credentials have been recognised by the Legal 500.  

Tom has a particular expertise in Royal Commissions and inquiries. Most recently, he was seconded as Senior Legal Counsel to the National Australia Bank for the Financial Services Royal Commission. This was the fourth Royal Commission in which he has acted. 

Tom was formerly the team leader of Corrs’ pro bono program with Justice Connect, overseeing the provision of legal services to people suffering homelessness. Before joining Corrs, Tom volunteered at the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre, where he assisted clients progress their claims for protection. Tom formerly worked at the United Nations International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia, as a member of the defence in The Prosecutor v. Jovica Stanišić & Franko Simatović.

Michael McCarthy
Partner
Michael has demonstrated expertise acting in complex, high-profile litigation and class actions, as well as Royal Commissions and other public inquiries.
Michael, originally from Sydney and having begun his career in teaching, worked at Corrs Chambers Westgarth from 2011 before establishing Hutton McCarthy in 2020.  
Michael has worked across government and business in litigation and inquiries, including acting for the Northern Territory Government, the Commonwealth Bank of Australia, NAB, Broadspectrum, the ACCC, TrustCo, the Department of Defence, British American Tobacco, Dulux, Woolworths and the Catholic Archdiocese of Sydney.
Disputes and inquiries can be very traumatic for a business and its employees. Michael has a talent for working with clients to take the anxiety out of the matter. Michael’s experience and expertise in this space allows him to get to the heart of the issues involved in a dispute to achieve the best outcomes for his clients as quickly as is possible.
